Dutch innovation for agricultural soils protection interest the united nations.
More than 80% of the planet’s agricultural soils are not in good conditions. Healthy soils are important not only as the basis of our food supply, but also as reservoirs for different ecosystems biodiversity and as carbon pools.
Almost two months ago, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) published a report assessing the sustainability of agricultural plastic products recommending the replacement of non-biodegradable, conventional polymers with biodegradable, bio-based polymers. Among these agricultural products to be substituted with biodegradable bio-based films are coated fertilizers, tree guards and shelters, plant support twines, pesticide impregnated fruit protection bags and plastic mulch films.
This excellent news is matching Europe’s environmental Strategic Plan «EU soil strategy for 2030». The new Soil Health Law will equate to the already EU-wide legal framework as those for Air and Water. Among the measures and actions on reducing contamination
from plastics are, the control and regulation on the unintentional release of microplastics (by 2022), the policy framework on bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastics (by 2022), and the ban of plastic mulch films. For this last one, with deadline by July 2024, biodegradability criteria will be adopted for certain polymers, such as coating agents and agricultural mulch films under the EU Fertilizing Products Regulation.
Together with EUROAGRO S.A., a subsidiary company of Holland Bio-Innovation in Uruguay, the team of scientists develops the so-called Green Chemistry, providing solutions that avoid the problem of the continuous accumulation of polluting plastics. From sustainable raw materials, the ingredients of the resins are researched, tested and materialized to give shape and specificity to biodegradable mulches.
The location is unbeatable, in the regional heart of South America’s bio-based raw materials productions (starches, bio-oils, agricultural and forestry residues, etc.), and presents a wide variety of crops in different soils and climate conditions. The first model industrial plant in Latin America, in bio-based biodegradable resins, was installed in Uruguay, for this year, start supplying the markets of the Americas and Europe under its registered trademarks No Soy Plástico®, I’m Not Plastic®, Ich Bin Kein Plastik®, Je Ne Suis Pas Du Plastique®, Não Sou Plástico®, etc. which represent a family of innovative solutions, adapted to each region.
The company is an associate member of the Japan Bioplastics Association (JBPA), with base products having the GreenPLA International Certification Biodegradable. We welcome the new EN 17033 standard specific for biodegradable mulch films for use in agriculture and horticulture.
It is positive to see how many countries around the globe have encouraged the abandonment of the plastic shopping bags and single-use plastics. Although the great majority of citizens quickly approved and adapted to this new environmental awareness consciousness, regulations and bans had to follow. Now it is the turn of company’s businesses, manufacturers and food producers to chip-in. Finally, it seems that a global agreement on plastic pollution might be happening. Hopefully this is the month for a global plastic treaty.More than 80% of the planet’s agricultural soils are not in good conditions.
